Engaging programs at the library even better with Friends

Friends of the Library are instrumental in bringing literary and cultural events to our community. They promote literacy, support engaging programs and lifelong learning, and provide for specialized materials for career development and to support local businesses.

The Friends sponsor programs for a variety of interests at our libraries and in the community. All programs are free, and we hope you get a chance to enjoy these experiences and workshops.

Family Museum Pass Program

The family museum pass program has been generously funded by the Friends of Spokane County Library District. Museum passes for Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture and for both Mobius Children’s Museum and Mobius Science Center are available for check out at each of our libraries. Creator in Residence

Delve into creativity and imagination with our Creator in Residence series at The Lab at North Spokane to uncover the creative economy and entrepreneurship found in Spokane County. Five local creators share their work through demonstrations and hands-on classes: graphic artist and publisher Derrick Freeland, artist and bookbinder Timothy Ely, jewelry designer Sondra Barrington, baker and cake decorator Catee Ng, and artist and manuscript illuminator Hannah Charlton. Each creator will be in residence for one month starting with Derrick Freeland in September. Registration is required for many of their classes, and we expect them to fill up fast, so don’t wait to sign up. Find more information in our fall issue of Engage.

Spokane Is Reading

Readers will find a lot to love about the 2018 Spokane Is Reading book choice: Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart. The novel is “an elegant tale of suspense, mystery, and wry humor” (Publisher’s Weekly starred review). Girl Waits with Gun is the first novel in the Kopp Sisters series and is based on actual events that took place in Paterson, New Jersey, and New York City, in 1941. Spokane Is Reading is a collaborative effort of Spokane County Library District, Spokane Public Library, and Auntie’s Bookstore. Best-selling author Amy Stewart discusses Girl Waits with Gun, the Kopp sisters, and the investigative skills that go into her writing.

After-Hours Open House with Unstrung

You’re invited to a special after-hours open house in the library. Unstrung performs, featuring cellist Karen Hawkins and violinist Lori DeGuire. A variety of wine samples from a local winery will be available for purchase. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Argonne Library. Small Business Saturday

Support local businesses by shopping small on Small Business Saturday, November 24, a program from American Express. Spokane County Library District is the Neighborhood Champion in Cheney, Medical Lake, and Millwood (Argonne) for this holiday shopping tradition, supporting our local communities. Stop by Cheney, Medical Lake, and Argonne libraries for a Small Business Saturday activity to complete while shopping at participating local businesses. Bring your completed activity back to the library to collect a prize, while supplies last.

Beer & Food Pairing

Millwood Brewing Co. (9013 E Frederick Ave) has quickly become the place to be in Millwood. For one night only, we bring the brewing company to the library for a night of beer tasting and food pairing. You can purchase a flight of four brews to sample a variety.
